Osobná História:
Carlisle, syn pastora anglikánskej cirkvi, vyrastal v období náboženského prenasledovania. Jeho otec, aby zbavil svet zla, viedol honby na čarodejnice, vlkolakov a upírov. Keď však zostarol, honby pripadli na starosť Carlislovi. Ten nemal toľko entuziazmu ako jeho otec, ale bol dosť šikovný, aby objavil klan skutočných upírov žijúcich v mestských stokách. Nastražil na nich pascu a jedného chytil. Carlisle verí, že tento upír bol príliš smädný nato, aby utekal a vedome sa rozhodol zaútočiť. Vrhol sa na Carlisla a krvácajúceho ho zanechal na ulici po tom, ako zabil ďalších dvoch mužov a uniesol tretieho.
Vediac ako by jeho otec reagoval, sa Carlisle odplazil do pivnice a ukryl sa medzi hnijúce zemiaky, kde prežil trojdňovú premenu. Keď sa odtiaľ dostal, bol už upírom. Najprv sa pokúšal sám seba zničiť, skákal z obrovských výšok alebo sa chcel utopiť v oceáne. Bol taký znechutený z toho čo sa z neho stalo, že odmietol živiť sa ľuďmi. Počas dvoch storočí sa mu podarilo vytvoriť si akýsi druh imunity voči pachu ľudskej krvi a bol tak schopný stať sa lekárom.
Počas svojich štúdií v Taliansku stretol klan upírov, Volturiovcov, ktorí sa mu zdali oveľa civilizovanejší a vzdelanejší, ako tí, ktorých poznal v Anglicku. Aro, Marcus a Caius boli traja upíri, ktorí inšpirovali niektoré Solimenove diela. Napriek tomu, že boli kultivovaní, vytrvalo presviedčali Carlisla, aby začal piť ľudskú krv. Prirodzene, odmietol.
V roku 1911 pracoval v meste Columbus, v štáte Ohio, kde liečil zlomenú nohu veselému a mladému dievčaťu menom Esme Platt. Krátko nato odišiel do Chicaga.
V Chicagu strávil niekoľko rokov a pomaly sa blížil koniec jeho osamelého života. (Na jednom mieste mohol ostať len dovtedy, kým boli ľudia ochotní mu veriť, že môže mať okolo 35 rokov, potom musel odísť.) V meste prepukla epidémia španielskej chrípky a Carlisle sa staral o Edwarda, ktorý práve prišiel o oboch rodičov a sám bol na pokraji smrti. Bola to Edwardova matka, ktorá požiadala doktora Cullena, aby ho zachránil. Carlisle je presvedčený, že „tušila“, že jediný on ho môže zachrániť a veľmi ho o to prosila. Rozhodol sa preto skoncovať so svojou osamelosťou a Edwarda premenil.
Spolu sa presťahovali do severného Wisconsinu, kde v roku 1921 Carlisle opäť stretol Esme. Tento krát jej zranenia boli výsledkom jej neúspešného pokusu o samovraždu. Carlisle si ju pamätal, a preto, že cítil ľútosť nad jej osudom, premenil Esme, aby jej život zachránil. Obaja sa do seba zamilovali a oficiálne sa zosobášili. (Sobáš si zopakovali iba jediný raz.)
Neskôr Carlisle našiel a premenil Rosalie. Dúfal, že bude Edwardovou partnerkou, ale nestalo sa tak. Potom ako Rose našla Emmetta, na ktorého zaútočil medveď, Carlisle ho tiež premenil. Napriek tomu, že Alice a Jasper neboli zmenení Carlislom, prijal ich ako členov rodiny, keď k nemu prišli.
Okolo roku 1936 sa Cullenovci presťahovali do Forksu. Tu narazili na Quileutských indiánov, ktorý majú schopnosť meniť sa na vlkov. Uzavreli spolu dohodu, ktorá hovorí, že vlkolaci nechajú Cullenovcov tak, len v prípade, že nikdy neuhryznú človeka a budú sa vyhýbať územiu Quileutov. Cullenovci žili vo Forkse niekoľko rokov, predtým ako odtiaľ odišli.
Späť do mesta sa vrátili až po nejakom čase strávenom na Aljaške. Na začiatku „Súmraku“, tu žili už 2 roky.
